Origins of the Soup Kitchen

When did this form of charity begin?

While societies have been using various methods to share food with the hungry for millennia, soup kitchens are certainly one of the more recognizable methods of doing so. The first soup kitchens, in the modern sense, may have emerged in the late 18th century. By the late 19th century, they were to be found in several American and European cities.

When soup kitchens first appeared, they were run by churches or private charities and served mostly soup and bread. Soup was economical because water could be added to serve more people.

Soup kitchens continue to exist for the homeless and struggling families across America. Use of soup kitchens has grown rapidly across the world, following the lasting global inflation in the cost of food that began in late 2006.
