Where Did the Word "Soup" Originate?

sop breadThe word soup comes from French soupe (soup or broth), which stems from the Latin “suppa” or bread soaked in broth. If you look back far enough you’ll find that these forms come from a Germanic source, from which also comes the word “sop”, a piece of bread used to soak up soup or a thick stew.
